 Rev.
John R. Schonkaes was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan on January 12,
1971. After fifth grade his family moved to South Florida, where
they attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Boca Raton. During
confirmation John first realized that God wanted him to become a
pastor. During his youth, John was involved with the church youth
group, attended a district convention, and served as a lector for
worship.
John participated in the pre-seminary program at Concordia
College, Ann Arbor, Michigan, majoring in both biblical languages
and sociology. He was a student senator, Student Dean of Chapel,
Spiritual Life Committee member, Concordia Youth Ministry Team
Leader, and performed in several dramatic productions. While at
Concordia, John met his wife, Heather, and they were married shortly
after he graduated in 1993.
In the fall of 1993, John continued his education at Concordia
Seminary, St. Louis. In 1995-1996, he served as vicar of Our Savior
Lutheran Church in Fishkill, New York. John received seminary awards
for his achievements in systematic theology and homiletics. He was
called to be pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Parma, Ohio,
following his graduation in May 1997.
While at Holy Trinity, Pastor John especially enjoyed teaching
and working with the youth and young families. He has been quite
active in SELC District activities such as hosting the 2000 SELC
District Convention at Holy Trinity. For the past two years Pastor
John has been Central Circuit Counselor.
The Schonkaes’ are blessed with three sons and a daughter.
Pastor John has been service at Christ the King since June
2001.
